The Question of War
-----------------------------------------------------------
New Message on Theravada Buddhist Forum

From: devoutbuddhist
Message 1 in Discussion
My dear Dharma friends, I have a serious problem here which I hope anyone would help me clarify about. I am from Singapore and as a citizen, it is compulsary for me to serve National Service in the Army. As a would be soldier, I would like to ask if war breaks out and an invasion of Sinapore occurs, would it be blameworthy for me to take up arms to defend my country? Personally, I really do not wish to engage in any form of killing and my sole goal in life is to strive hard to attain enlightenment. I am very terrified that circumstances would compel me to shatter my moral precepts. And also, I heard that one cannot be ordain as a monk if one's parent does not permit so. Is this true? My parents wished me to lead a layman life but I refuse. I used to be a rather wicked person until I encountered Buddhism. Now, I really really hope that I would be given the opportunity to be ordain as a Buddhist monk to really practise. I understand that this involves a lot of suffering but I promise that I would endure it. The only thing which I really fear in life is for me to lose my goal of enlightenment and be the wicked person that I used to be. I'm really terrified of missing the conditions of practising Buddhism or hearing the Buddha's doctrine in my subsequent lifetimes, that is if I fail to achieve enlightenment in this lifetime and have to wander about in the ocean of Samsara again.

Dear friends, In Theravada Buddhism Tradition , what ever we did in ceremony , we have been told always from the Right to the Left , such as walk around the temple, stupa , chapel or even by Walking Meditation . By Sitting Meditation , It is right as Bhikkhu Pesala's explanation. Most Bhikkhus and The Buddhist , practising by look at the Sitting position of Lord Buddha , There are the reason for that . Meditation in Tradition ( Term of Mind Meditate ) is learned how to work with ours mind as Natural . In my opinion , The Moon , The Earth , The Sun and even Universe are all moving in the same direction , from The right to The Left , and they all the energy, " Big Energy " as we all knew. So, by sitting right hand on left hand, right foot on the left foot , " is Sitting and Meditation , following The Universe energy." For the person who always practising could find out this energy on the new full moon. B.Eagle

Right hand, left hand
-----------------------------------------------------------
New Message on Theravada Buddhist Forum
-----------------------------------------------------------
From: Bill Z
Message 1 in Discussion
Dear Tao,
I have a very limited
perspective as I do not understand what is happening to you. My Ajahn always
asks me am I practising?, and if you are then isn't that what counts? When you
practise what is important takes over and will guide you. Isn't posture there to
help you practise? If you are doing it isn't that enough?
Hope you are keeping well,
All the Best,
Bill Z
In some forums you ask a simple question and you get some zen like mystical
answer. So, I will try here. In my meditation I find that I am able to settle
down into my breath with ease when my left hand is over my right. Most teachings
would state that the right hand should go over the left.
Now, since our meditation is based on increasing our attention and
awareness, one would think that one way is not more important than the other.
However, within my Taoist background, I know that one's posture, even in the
slightest variations can have an effect. Does anyone have a perspective on this
they would care to share?

E-Sangha is a lively forum, and well worth joining. You'll find my reply in the Theravada Forum.
Awareness And Hand Mudra Â?It is quite important to keep the back straight while sitting, otherwise the breathing will not be deep and relaxed. The position of the hands is irrelevant or trivial. Awareness is important, Â?Yatha yatha va panassa kayo panihito hoti, tatha tatha nam pajanati Â? However, his body is disposed, he knows it as it is.Â? (Mahasatipatthana Sutta) In simple terms, sit still, and don't fidget, scratch, or move without clearly knowing the intention to do so."

"even in the slightest variations can have an effect" This is true, but you have to ask yourself if it is an effect that matters. From what I have seen, Taoist meditation works toward some very different purposes from that of Buddhist Vipassana meditation, so it is not a good idea to mix the instructions for one with instructions for the other. From my perspective, the most effective posture is one that allows us to settle comfortably into a postion we can maintain without strain for the duration of the meditation sitting and one that promotes a relaxed and alert mind. Which hand is above the other does not seem to have a discernable difference in this case. Bhikkhu Pesala, I would be interested in your reply but don't know where E-Sangha is. Please provide a link or duplicate your reply here. Thanks.

Dear friends, The Buddhist life in Asia ; After we saw ours mind was transform. As we all knew, Meditation is individual practising. As adult, ours mind could not be in purity as it used to be. Life involved with so much kind , to be able to lives and survive we did the best for ourself. And the most " easy " way is by used The Dark side of mind . So when ever mind was transform , always show in form, shape and all kind of color. Once we saw that we could understand, what really mean for " Purity of mind ". Back to school , there are no more school as this ages, only Temples! Ajahn Bhikkhu was willing to support with Metta Karuna, " All the lays , as these ages, more in patience.
