Loving-kindness meditation will probably help. So too will chanting - either listening or doing it yourself.

Trouble communicating

New Message on Theravada Buddhist Forum

-----------------------------------------------------------
From: Kicking_Mister_Bubbles
Message 1 in Discussion

I was hoping you guys could help me with a problem. Since I was little people have been asking me to repeat myself. I tend to ramble, talk too fast, too low, slur, trip over my words and not get the message across. I've always been embarrassed by it, especially now that I'm in highschool. It's not a physical problem, I've been to a speech therapist as a child. I asked my parents if I could go again, but they didn't seem too enthused. It may seem kind of strange that I'm asking here, but I don't know where else to turn. Any guidance would be appreciated.

There are far more reasons than that that casual sex can cause harm, but it is also true that a sincere, loving relationship can be a wonderful thing. Each person has to make their own judgement in these matters and practicing Buddhism helps us see clearly enough to be able to do that.

There are 2 reasons why pre marital sex could cause harm: 1) What if you get AIDS 2) What if she gets pregnant?

I think the best reference you will find is the five precepts for laypeople. It is considered a violation of the third precept, which concerns sexual misconduct, to have sexual relations with an inappropriate partner. This would include someone who is married or still under the protection of parents or family, or if you are married, and it also specifically prohibits sexual relations that are coerced or pressured. I have never seen anything in the texts of the Pali Canon that would prohibit a loving relationship between responsible, unmarried adults. It is also good to remember that the first principle in Buddhism is not to cause harm, and when we practice mindfulness, we can become aware of how easy it is to cause harm in matters of sexual relations, the practice of Buddhism would ask us to proceed with great caution in these matters, leading us to avoid casual sex on this basis alone. Buddhism also teaches that restraint of the senses is a good thing in all circumstances and this will also give us guidance. So I believe that Buddhism provides all the help we need to know how to act responsibly. It is then up to us to do it.

Hey I'm really confused about this topic because some Buddhists say that there is nothing wrong with pre marital sex while i've also heard that in the Jewel Sermon, complete celibacy until marriage is regarded as a blessing. Can anyone enlighten me on this topic, especially those who can use direct references from the Buddha's discourses. With metta,

Sawatdi Khrap Blue Eagle!
I just come back from Wat Patem (middle way between Mae Ramat and Ban Tak) in the mountains where I worked as doctor in the tradition of Mo Jivaka, the doctor of the Buddha. My patients were hilltribe people (Lisaw, Karen, Meo (Hmong) and expatriated Thai after the construction of the Bhumipon Dam. Two months of hard and happy work gave me the conviction to give up my live in Germany and to follow my duty, to do the best what I can. I'm not looking for Awakening, for the Holy Life - for me Dhamma and Kamma are duty, action for development of oneself and others.

I have big support from two monks staying longtime together with Tan Adjahn Buddhadasa at Suan Mokkh and Luang Po Jon, my kru. The best kalyamitta-connection of my life. I will do my job.

with metta!

Thank you very much for your advice. It was what I thought of initially too but it feels great nevertheless to have encouragement. By the way, I hope to be ordain at Wat Nong Pah Pong, Ajahn Chah monastry when I grow up. I really pray hard that I would have a wise and strict Dharma teacher like the late Ajahn Chah to guide me through my practise though, but I would nevertheless put in full effort into the practise myself.

Dear
Devoutbuddhist,

I don't have a scripture
answer for you as I do ot know where the Lord Buddha discusses such
issues. In previous studies I came across the Bhagavad Gita and I believe
this book does raise good questions for contemplation.

From my
own understanding Buddhism doesn't practise absolutes, and that
through meditation seeks the insight on the particular situation. Perhaps
looking at whether there is violence in your life now might be more
constructive.

I don't know about the
issue of taking orders and parental consent.

Through meditation and
ongoing good practice one would hope the desire for wickedness would
disappear. Working on the path to enlightenment hopefully would
show that there is little point in wickedness.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best,

Bill Z

My dear Dharma friends,

I have a
serious problem here which I hope anyone would help me clarify
about. I am from Singapore and as a citizen, it is compulsary for me
to serve National Service in the Army. As a would be soldier, I
would like to ask if war breaks out and an invasion of Sinapore
occurs, would it be blameworthy for me to take up arms to defend my
country? Personally, I really do not wish to engage in any form of
killing and my sole goal in life is to strive hard to attain
enlightenment.

I am very
terrified that circumstances would compel me to shatter my moral
precepts. And also, I heard that one cannot be ordain as a monk if
one's parent does not permit so. Is this true? My parents wished me
to lead a layman life but I refuse.

I used
to be a rather wicked person until I encountered Buddhism. Now, I
really really hope that I would be given the opportunity to be
ordain as a Buddhist monk to really practise. I understand that this
involves a lot of suffering but I promise that I would endure it.
The only thing which I really fear in life is for me to lose my goal
of enlightenment and be the wicked person that I used to be. I'm
really terrified of missing the conditions of practising Buddhism or
hearing the Buddha's doctrine in my subsequent lifetimes, that is if
I fail to achieve enlightenment in this lifetime and have to wander
about in the ocean of Samsara again.

Hi, I used to visit Singapore quite regularly and I know the system there pretty well. As far as I know, the national service is for a period of about 2 years and not necessarily that you have to serve in the army. You could explain to the minister of you district of your devotion to buddhism and ask to serve in other areas such as civil defence or the police. Even if you happen to be drafted into the army, it does not mean that you will become a fighting soldier. In the army itself, there are many support services such as cook, medic, driver, store keeper, etc. that you can contribute and serve your country in times of war. Further, the army is the best place for practice in walking meditation where a large number of hours are spent in marching. If you can go about doing the other chores mindfully, it should not be a hindrance to your meditation practice. Even the prince of Thailand who is a devout buddhist is army trained. If the above advice is still not suitable, you always have the option and free choice to leave the country for good and migrate to some place where you don't have to do national service. Personally, for me it is an honor to serve my country and I will delay the ordainining myself into monkhood until I finish my national service. As far as I know, Lord Buddha left home to seek enlightenment when he was a prince without the blessing of his king father. Such a rule does not exist in Thailand as I have many friends joining the sangha and ordaining as monk despite objections from their parents. However, this does not mean that one should not respect one's parents. We must not forget that the debt we owe to our parents for bringing us into this world can never be repaid even if we have to carry them aound on our shoulders for our life time. With metta, TQS
