Message 2 in Discussion
Here's a short piece on vivisection. The environement is the home of many living things. One should not intentionally pollute it with poisons that will kill insects and small animals. The Buddha's own relatives were massacred in a war. The Buddha explained that this happened because in a previous life they had poured poison into a river, killing all of the fish. All actions done with a bad intention have a bad result, sooner or later. Even the Buddha could not intervene to save his own relatives from the results of their past kamma.

Hi,
The key to attaining jhanas is keeping the precepts diligently.
Then meditate throughout your waking hours. One and a half hour of meditation is not enough for any thing. Ajhan Chah said, Â?If you can breathe all the time, so you can mediate all the time. Meditation is breathing.Â? As I said earlier, meditation does not mean sitting immobilize for a couple of hours, then after completion go about doing your other activities without mindfulness and awareness. After sitting it is best to continue with your mediation and do your daily chores meditatively. Walking and eating meditations are both very good practices to build up this habit of continuing meditation.

Re: psychic powers

New Message on Theravada Buddhist Forum

From: Pesala
Message 4 in Discussion
According to the Buddha, there are three kinds of miracles:
1. Flying in the sky, diving into the earth, walking on water, and similar feats. The Buddha did not speak highly of these.
2. Reading minds, predicting the future, etc. The Buddha did not speak highly of these.
3. The miracle of instruction. Abandon what is unwholesome, cultivate what is wholesome, purify your mind. The Buddha spoke highly of this miracle. One who follows the Buddha's instruction gains happiness never experienced before, happiness that they had never even imagined was possible. So one should follow the Buddha's instruction by practising mindfulness meditation.
The purpose of Dhamma is served by developing morality, concentration, and wisdom. Psychic powers may cause more harm than good. Ordinary people are greatly impressed by such things, but the Buddha likened the exibition of such powers to impress others to a woman showing her body for the sake of money.
The Buddha and his leading disciples like Moggallana used their powers to teach Dhamma, not for the sake of gain and fame. After one monk used his powers to take down a sandalwood almsbowl from the top of a bamboo, the Buddha laid down a training rule for monks not to exhibit their powers.

Hi, I have seen some fantastic feats done by Shaolin Temple monks using internal energy but not walking through walls. However, there have been mentioned of walking through walls by highly achieved Taoist priests. Floating in the air is quite common and I have seen some advance practitioners of TM able to float a few feet off the ground. Lord Buddha can do more than that such as seeing all previous existence. But these powers are not the main aim of the practice and is actually side track. In the book "six yogas of Naropa" there was mentioned that these practices were usually done by adepts who were already awakened/liberated i.e people who have successfully completed walking the Noble Eightfold Path. Hope this bit of info helps TQS

Dear NomadEzekiel , It is interesting questions , floating in the air, walking trough the walls. To be honest, I never seen anyone could do like that as long as my ages, except in the movie , Hong Kong film . There are some part in Asia , for example India , Nepal , Tibet or even in some part in Thailand . Somebody are practising psychic powers still , but doesn't like in the film. In India , there are some " Sadhu " practising , not the one in the tourist area but another area , far away from the people. In Nepal and Tibet , both practising in Hinduism and Buddhism ( Tibetan Buddhism ) in the area of Himalayan Ranges. In Southeast Asia most are in the Deep forest or in the special area , so far I heard from the people , in many subject as they are looking for. Hope it's help. B.Eagle
