Hello all, I am a newcomer to buddhism and am eager to learn more, so could I have some guidance please. One of the main precepts states that no living thing shall be harmed,. as I am not a vegetarian and neither are my family how am I to feel when I am eating meat. I approve of organic farming and try to buy food from well managed estates but this is not always possible. If I do not give my three children adequate food surely I am harming them as well which is also against the basic precept. Help on the subject greatly appreciated greg

A father was grieving over the death of his son. The
Buddha visited him and consoled him, reciting this verse.
Pemato jayati soko, pemato jayati bhayam
Pemato vippamuttassa, natthi soko kuto bhayam? (Dhp v 213)
From affection springs grief, from affection springs fear;
for him who is wholly free from affection there is no grief, whence fear?
There are many different kinds of love. Pure love (metta) does not give rise to grief or fear as it is impartial and detached. Whenever our love is defiled by attachment or affection, then these give rise to grief, sorrow, and fear or anxiety of losing the object of our affection.
Take the boyfriend/girlfriend test. If you love your boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife, you want them to be happy, right? If they tell you one day that they love someone else and want to leave you for them, if you love them you should be happy. They found someone they like more than they like you, so they will be happier if they leave you for that person. So if they are happy, you should be happy because you love them, right? If you feel sad on learning that they want to leave you, then that sadness is due to attachment, not due to love.
