HI
My humble advice is if you understand the basic principles then test them against your own experiences. See for yoursself if they are true. Do they teach you anything about life or about you?
Follow the 8-fold path and the 5 precepts and meditate - all of these as much as you can.
Meditate on what is happening in your thoughts and emotions. Meditate on your breathing. Watch them work. Dont attempt to create altered states of consciousness or psychic phenomena. Insight Meditation is a simple observation of where you happen to be at that time and place. Note how things are interdependent, transient and anatta (i.e. have no unchanging core that can be owned or controlled).
By doing these things you are putting what you know intellectually into practice and will gain deeper understanding as you go along.
Hope this helps
Metta
James

I wish to ask if all living things should be valued and not harmed, how does a buddhist deal with a parasite, germ or virus?

I would recommend www.accesstoinsight.com That page has a very good introduction to the basics of Buddhism, and quite a lot of other interesting material. As for meditation - here is another link to a brief but very good primer on it. http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/modern/thanissaro/breathmed.html As for what the point of it is, here are some things that help me: Meditation helps develop mindfulness - awareness, paying attention. When you pay attention, you don't make careless mistakes and you notice things you wouldn't otherwise. Practicing mindfulness through meditation helps you to be more mindful when you aren't meditating. Meditating is good karma. Meditation improves your mood and lowers your blood pressure. More advanced meditators than me could probably describe a lot more benefits - such as the insights that are the ultimate goal of the practice. Hope that helps.

Where to start

I've been reading through a lot of introductions to buddhism, I've understood it's basic principles and beliefs, but I've yet to really plunge into anything in depth. Where do I go from here? What is core material that anyone interested in buddhism should read? I understand the importance of daily meditation, but don't... really... understand what to do. Meditate how, on what? I'm eager to begin, but don't know exactly where.

Hi
I have heard of rumours of this before. One argument goes that the Wise Men came from the East. Traditionally two of them are seen as Persian Zorastrarian Magi (hence them following a star) but one is usually descibed as coming from further east. This meant at least Afghanistan which was a Buddhist country at this time.
There is also a significant gap in the New Testament between when Jesus was 16 or so and late 20s. He returns crossing the River Jordan when he is baptised by John The Baptist suggesting he had been to the East.
So yes some believe he went further east and returned somewhat enlightened by the experience if not Buddhist completely.
Peace
James
